Jean-Guy Gendron (born August 30, 1934 in Montréal , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach . The left winger played over 900 games for the New York Rangers , Boston Bruins , Canadiens de Montréal and Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League between 1955 and 1972 . He let his active career end with the Nordiques de Québec in the World Hockey Association , which he led as captain and a little later as head coach.

Career

Beginnings

Jean-Guy Gendron ran in his youth for the Trois-Rivières Reds in the Québec Junior Hockey League (QJHL). He made his professional debut as part of the playoffs of the Ligue de hockey senior du Québec for the As de Québec , for which he should appear again in the course of his career. For the time being, however, he returned for another year in the junior division before he joined the Providence Reds from the American Hockey League (AHL) for the 1954/55 season. There the winger convinced with 39 scorer points from 47 games, so that he was obliged in May 1955 in exchange for Bill Ezinicki and a financial return from the New York Rangers from the National Hockey League (NHL).

New York, Boston, Montréal and Québec

In the highest league in North America, Gendron was initially mainly used as a defensively oriented attacker, so that he barely distinguished himself as a scorer with the Rangers in his first three years. In June 1958 he reached the NHL Intra-League Draft to the Boston Bruins , where he exceeded the mark of 20 goals for the first time in the 1959/60 season. In November 1960, however, the Bruins gave him to the Canadiens de Montréal and received André Pronovost in return . There the Canadian ended the season, but was again committed in the Intra-League Draft by the New York Rangers before returning to the Boston Bruins in the same way in June 1962.

In Boston, his offensive production dropped significantly in the 1963/64 season, so that he was initially sent to the AHL and ran there for four years for the As de Québec. 1967/68 was his most successful year, he scored 87 points in 72 games, placed himself among the best scorers in the league and reached the playoff final for the Calder Cup with the team , in which, however, they were defeated by the Rochester Americans .

Philadelphia and end of career

Gendron's return to the NHL was made possible by the great league expansion of 1967, so the newly formed Philadelphia Flyers bought the As de Québec and integrated them into their organization as a farm team . At the beginning of the 1968/69 season, the attacker was regularly in the Flyers' squad and this year achieved his career best in the NHL with 55 points from 74 games. As a result, he was active for four years in Philadelphia before moving to the newly founded World Hockey Association (WHA) in 1972 for the Nordiques de Québec , where he became the first team captain . After the 1973/74 season, Gendron ended his active career. In total, he had completed 906 games in the NHL and collected 394 points scorer.

At the end of his playing career, Gendron took over the position of head coach at the Nordiques. Already in his first year he led the team to the playoff finals for the Avco World Trophy , but lost to the Houston Eros 4-0. After another season he was replaced by Marc Boileau and subsequently retired from professional ice hockey.
