The defender played over 1,000 games in the National Hockey League , most of them for the Nordiques de Québec , which he also led as team captain, and the Winnipeg Jets . With the Canadian national team , he won the silver medal at the 1989 World Cup . Since 2011 he has worked in the NHL as a scout for the Detroit Red Wings .
Career
youth
Mario Marois played in his youth for the Remparts de Québec in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ), the highest-ranking junior league in his home province of Québec. In his first full LHJMQ season, the defender won the playoffs for the Coupe du Président with the Remparts and then took part in the Memorial Cup . His breakthrough in Québec came in the following season 1976/77, when he led the team as team captain, scored 84 points in 72 games and was then elected to the LHJMQ Second All-Star Team . As a result, he chose the New York Rangers in the NHL Amateur Draft in 1977 out of 62 positions. For now, however, Marois spent most of the following season in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the New Haven Nighthawks , the Rangers' farm team , and only played nine games in the National Hockey League (NHL).
NHL
At the beginning of the 1978/79 season, the defender established himself in the Rangers' NHL squad and promptly reached the Stanley Cup final in his first full NHL season , but lost to the Canadiens de Montréal there . Marois shouldn't get any closer to the championship in his career. After just over three years, the Rangers gave it to the Vancouver Canucks together with Jim Mayer in November 1980 and received Jere Gillis and Jeff Bandura in return . Just four months later, the Canucks transferred him to the Nordiques de Québec , who sent Garry Lariviere to Vancouver for it.
Back in his home town of Québec, Marois increased his personal statistics and established himself as an offensive defender in the NHL, so he reached 49 points in 80 games in the 1983/84 season and a plus / minus rating of +51, which was among defenders in this Year was surpassed only by Denis Potvin and Paul Coffey . In addition, as with the Remparts, he was convincing with his leadership qualities and in 1982 took over the captaincy of André Dupont , which he held for three years until he handed it over to Peter Šťastný in 1985 . A little later, in November 1985, the Nordiques gave it to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for Robert Picard . In Winnipeg, the Canadian built on his previous performances and scored 51 points in 79 games in the 1987/88 season, the best of his NHL career. After about three years with the Jets, Marois returned to Québec in December 1988 when Winnipeg sent him back to the Nordiques in exchange for Gord Donnelly . There he ended the season and then represented his home country with the Canadian national team at the 1989 World Cup , where Team Canada won the silver medal.
End of career
After another season with the Nordiques, Marois was selected in the 1990 NHL Waiver Draft by the St. Louis Blues , where he was active for one and a half seasons before the Blues gave him to the Winnipeg Jets in November 1991 and in return an eight-round vote for received the 1992 NHL Entry Draft . At his old place of work, the defender completed his last 34 NHL games before ending his career with the Hamilton Canucks in the AHL in the 1992/93 season . In the summer of 1993 he declared his active career, in which he had completed a total of 1055 games in the NHL and scored 471 points, officially ended. He then looked after the Hamilton Canucks in the 1993/94 season as an assistant coach, but did not stay in this profession and has instead been active as a scout since 2000 . In this role, he has previously worked for the Vancouver Canucks (2000–2003 and 2007–2008), the Carolina Hurricanes (2008–2010) and the Detroit Red Wings (since 2011).
