geography

L'Ancienne-Lorette is completely enclosed by the area of the city of Québec, making it an enclave . Adjacent arrondissements are La Haute-Saint-Charles in the north, Les Rivières in the east and Sainte-Foy-Sillery-Cap-Rouge in the south and west. The terrain is largely flat and is drained in a south-easterly direction by the strongly meandering Rivière Lorette.

history

The Jesuit father Pierre Chaumonot built a chapel for the Wyandot in 1674 on the site of the present cemetery . They had fled here a year earlier during a war against the Iroquois . Since Chaumonot had been cured of a serious illness after a pilgrimage to Loreto , he named the chapel after this Italian place. In 1697 the Wyandot moved a few kilometers further north and founded the settlement Nouvelle-Lorette (New Loreto), today's Wendake . At the old location, now called Vieille-Lorette or Ancienne-Lorette (Alt-Loreto), French colonists settled instead. The small village was predominantly agricultural for more than two centuries. In 1948 the municipality of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette was founded. The opening of the nearby Québec Airport in 1957 resulted in a marked increase in population. The community received city status in 1967 and is renamed L'Ancienne-Lorette.

The provincial government ordered the merger of L'Ancienne-Lorette and other municipalities with the city of Québec , which came into effect on January 1, 2002. Saint-Augustin was now part of the Laurentien arrondissement of the city of Québec. This approach met with great resistance from the population. In a referendum on January 20, 2004, 61.4% of the voters were in favor of the separation, although the required quorum of 35% yes-votes of all voters was only slightly exceeded. The community was re-established on January 1, 2006, but had to cede some competencies to the community association of the agglomeration of Québec . Since then it has also been part of the Communauté métropolitaine de Québec association .
