geography

Les Rivières is located in the geographic center of the urban area. The name (dt. "The rivers") refers to the location on the Rivière Saint-Charles and its tributaries Rivière Lorette and Rivière du Berger. Neighboring arrondissements of the city of Québec are La Haute-Saint-Charles in the northwest, Charlesbourg in the northeast, La Cité-Limoilou in the east and Sainte-Foy-Sillery-Cap-Rouge in the south. In addition, Les Rivières is bordered to the west by the municipality of L'Ancienne-Lorette , an enclave within the city. Les Rivières is also divided into the Duberger – Les Saules, Neufchâtel-Est – Lebourgneuf and Vanier districts.

history

The Arrondissement Les Rivières has existed since the large municipal merger on January 1, 2002. The former western districts of Québec were merged with the previously independent city of Vanier . Vanier had been an enclave and had a population of 11,054 in the 2001 census. The remaining parts of the arrondissement were incorporated into the city in the early 1970s: In 1970 Duberger and Les Saules joined the city, in 1971 Neufchâtel was added, in 1973 Charlesbourg-Ouest (corresponds to the eastern part of the Neufchâtel-Est-Lebourgneuf district). When the districts were redistributed on November 1, 2009, smaller parts of Les Rivières came to the arrondissements of Charlesbourg and La Haute-Saint-Charles.
