Denis Charles Potvin (born October 29, 1953 in Ottawa , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The defender was active for the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League from 1973 to 1988 and won four Stanley Cups in a row during that time . He also led the team that made him in 1973 to the first overall position was selected in the Draft, eight years as captain and holds several records, so the player's shirt number 5 of the first franchise credit history locked was. With the Canadian national team , he won a gold medal at the 1976 Canada Cup and a bronze medal at the 1986 World Cup .
Potvin is considered one of the best defensive players of his generation, so he was awarded the James Norris Memorial Trophy three times as the best defender in the NHL and was also the first defensive player to reach the mark of 1000 scorer points . He also received the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's best rookie and was a five-time NHL First All-Star . In 1991 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
Career
Potvin made his debut for the junior team Ottawa 67’s at the age of 15 and stayed with it for six seasons. During that time, he was voted best defender in the league twice.
When he reached the required age of 20, he was immediately drafted as the No. 1 pick in the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft by the New York Islanders. This became the beginning of a dynasty . With Denis Potvin, the New York Islanders were four times Stanley Cup winners (1980, 1981, 1982, 1983) in five finals.
In his first season, Potvin won the Calder Memorial Trophy , which is awarded to the best rookie . Potvin established himself as one of the best NHL defenders in a short time through robustness, technical strength, overview of the game structure and leadership qualities and also won the James Norris Trophy in 1976, 1978 and 1979 , which recognized him as the best defender in the league.
After 15 seasons and over 1000 games for the Islanders, Denis Potvin resigned from professional sport at the end of the 1987/88 season. In 1992 he was the first player in the franchise to be honored that his jersey number (5) is no longer available and has been hanging under the roof since then.
With the Canadian national team, Potvin won the Canada Cup in 1976 . In 1981 he took second place at the same tournament. In 1986 he won the bronze medal at the World Cup with Canada . Potvin was also part of the NHL All-Star Team, which played the Challenge Cup against the Soviet national team in 1979 .
In 1991 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .

family
His brother Jean Potvin also spent most of his career with the Islanders, so the brothers won two Stanley Cups together. In addition, her cousin Marc Potvin (1967-2006) was also an NHL professional. However , they are not related to Félix Potvin .
