Garry Michael Monahan (born October 20, 1946 in Barrie , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 770 games for the Canadiens de Montréal , Detroit Red Wings , Los Angeles Kings , Toronto Maple in the course of his active career between 1963 and 1982 leafs and Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League on the position of the center has denied. Monahan was selected in the first overall position in the 1963 NHL Amateur Draft .
Career
When talent was first selected by the NHL teams with the NHL Amateur Draft in 1963 , the Canadiens de Montréal used the opportunity of first right to select 16-year-old Monahan. Only a year later he moved as a junior to the Peterborough Petes in the Ontario Hockey Association . In his third and final year, he played with Billy Harris , among others , who was to be selected first nine years after him in the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft .
In the 1967/68 season he made his debut with the Canadiens, but played mostly in the Central Professional Hockey League with the Houston Apollos . Together with Jacques Lemaire he fought for the last available place in the very strong squad of Montreal. After a year that he had spent mostly in the American Hockey League with the Cleveland Barons , he moved to the Detroit Red Wings in a swap deal that brought Pete Mahovlich to Montreal . Here he made it to a regular player, but was passed on to the Los Angeles Kings in February until the end of the 1969/70 season . After the season ended, a barter deal brought him to the Toronto Maple Leafs . In return, Bob Pulford moved to Los Angeles.
In a row with Dave Keon , he developed into a solid, hard-working, defensive attacker. He played with the Leafs for four years. After only one game in the 1974/75 season , he was passed on to the Vancouver Canucks . He had three successful years, but was the 1978 CHL - farm team to the Tulsa Oilers sent. He returned to the Maple Leafs in the summer, for whom he played his final season in the NHL.
Following his NHL career, he played for three years for Seibu Tetsudo Tokyo in Japan and ended his active career there in 1982.
