Rick Douglas Green (born February 20, 1956 in Belleville , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player (defender) and coach who served in National Hockey for the Washington Capitals , Montréal Canadiens , Detroit Red Wings and New York Islanders from 1976 to 1991 League played.
Career
As a junior he played for the London Knights in the OHA . After an outstanding 1975/76 season in which he was elected to the league's All-Star Team, the Washington Capitals selected him with their top draft law in the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft . He was also selected in the 1976 WHA Amateur Draft . The Québec Nordiques acquired the rights in the second round in 10th place.
For the 1976/77 season he made the leap into the NHL and was able to establish himself as a defensively oriented defender. In his six years with the Capitals he gave the defensive of his team a stop. Since Washington could never qualify for the playoffs during this time, he also took part in the ice hockey world championship in 1979 , 1981 and 1982 . In the latter, he won the bronze medal with the Canadian national ice hockey team.
In September 1982 the Capitals brought in Rod Langway , Brian Engblom and Craig Laughlin . In return, Green had to join the Montreal Canadiens with Ryan Walter . Also in Montreal he succeeded in giving the Canadiens further security through his constant game. A highlight of his career was winning the Stanley Cup at the end of the 1985/86 season . Thanks to his strength on the defensive, he was also in the squad of the NHL team at Rendez-vous '87 . After participating again in the Stanley Cup final in 1989, he moved to Italy for one season at HC Meran . The season was overshadowed by a serious injury. Recovered from this, he played again in the 1990 ice hockey world championship.
For the 1990/91 season he returned to the NHL and played one season for the Detroit Red Wings . The following season he played four more games for the New York Islanders .
After his playing career, he initially stayed with the Islanders, where he served as an assistant coach before spending the second half of the 1990s as an assistant to his former teammate Larry Robinson with the Los Angeles Kings . In 2001 he returned to the Canadiens as an assistant coach.
