Ryan William Walter (* 23. April 1958 in New Westminster , British Columbia ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player (center) and current - trainer , who from 1978 to 1993 for the Washington Capitals , Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League played . His son Ben Walter is also a professional ice hockey player.
Walter is also the author of non-fiction books on the subject of training in ice hockey.
Career
As a junior with the Kamloops Chiefs in the WCHL together with Andy Moog . Within the league, he moved to the Seattle Breakers . There he played a very good season and was selected in the first round of the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft by the Washington Capitals as second .
He immediately made it to the NHL for the 1978/79 season . After a good rookie season , he led the Capitals scorer list with Mike Gartner and Dennis Maruk in the following years . During his time in Washington he participated with the Canadian national team in the ice hockey world championships in 1979 , 1981 and 1982 .
Together with Rick Green he was given to the Montreal Canadiens for Rod Langway , Brian Engblom , Doug Jarvis and Craig Laughlin . He stayed in Montreal for nine years and won the Stanley Cup with the team in the 1985/86 season . An injury cost him most of the 1990/91 season .
The following season he moved to the Vancouver Canucks as a free agent . There he mainly played a defensive role. He ended his career after two years in Vancouver.
After his active career, he worked as a television commentator at TSN from 1993 to 1998 . From 2008 to 2010, Walter served two seasons as assistant coach at the Vancouver Canucks under head coach Alain Vigneault . In the 2010 calendar year he was hired as head coach of the Canadian women's ice hockey team and was behind the gang for the first time at the 4 Nations Cup . At the 2011 World Cup , Walter won the silver medal with the Canadian team.
