Jeffrey Craig "Jeff" Halpern (born May 3, 1976 in Potomac , Maryland ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach . During his playing career, the center played over 1,000 games for seven teams in the National Hockey League between 1999 and 2014 , most of them for the Washington Capitals . With the national team of the USA he took part in several world championships and won the bronze medal in 2004 . Since June 2018 he has been the assistant coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning , for which he was previously active as a player.
Career
After graduating from Princeton University , Halpern began his career with the Washington Capitals in the 1999/2000 season , after he was undrafted as a free agent and was able to play 79 of the 82 games. Before the 2005/06 season - the first season after the NHL lockout - he was named team captain by the Capitals .
In the summer of 2006, he finally moved as a free agent from Washington to the Dallas Stars and signed a four-year contract and was considered indirectly along with the commitment of Eric Lindros as a replacement for Jason Arnott who had migrated . At the trade deadline of the 2007/08 season he was transferred from Dallas to the Tampa Bay Lightning along with Jussi Jokinen and Mike Smith . In return, Brad Richards and Johan Holmqvist came to Texas.
On March 3, 2010, it was given to the Los Angeles Kings as part of the trade deadline for Teddy Purcell and a third-round vote . In September 2010, Halpern signed with the Montréal Canadiens . On July 1, 2011, he agreed to a one-year contract with the Washington Capitals. After that year Halpern was again available as a free agent and was signed by the New York Rangers in July 2012, again for one year . In New York, he completed 30 games before he on the waiver was set to the AHL farm team to be transferred to the Rangers. Halpern's previous employer, the Canadiens, took the opportunity in March 2013 and provided him again with a contract until the end of the 2012/13 season.
In September 2013 Halpern then joined the Finnish club Turun Palloseura , but did not complete a competitive game there, as the contract allowed a return to the NHL, which was subsequently made possible by a one-year contract with the Phoenix Coyotes .
After the 2013/14 season, Halpern ended his active career, in which he had played a total of over 1,000 games in the NHL. For the 2015/16 season he switched to the coaching staff of the Syracuse Crunch , which act as the farm team of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Within the organization, he was promoted to Jon Cooper's assistant coach at the Lightning in June 2018 .
