Patrick Maroon (born April 23, 1988 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League since August 2019 . With the St. Louis Blues , he won the Stanley Cup in the 2019 playoffs .

Career

Patrick Maroon first played for the Texarkana Bandits in the US Junior League North American Hockey League from 2005 to 2006 and was elected to the league's all-rookie team after a good rookie season in which Maroon was the team's second best scorer . The striker then went on to play another season in the NAHL, now for the St. Louis Bandits . In 57 meetings of the regular season he contributed 40 goals and 55 assists to the playoff of the Bandits and was the best scorer in the league. In the final round, the American increased his points yield again and, with 23 points in twelve games, had a significant share in winning the championship with the Bandits. His achievements were recognized with the nomination as the most valuable player of the season and Maroon also received a nomination for the First All-Star Team of the NAHL.

In the 2007 NHL Entry Draft , Maroon was selected in the sixth round at a total of 161st position by the Philadelphia Flyers . The following season the winger spent with the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League , where he made his immediate breakthrough in Canada's top junior league. With 90 scorer points in 64 games of the regular season, he led the internal scorer list of the London Knights and was 15th in the league, tied with Matt Beleskey . During the 2007/08 season , the attacker made his debut for the Philadelphia Phantoms , the then farm team of the Philadelphia Flyers, in the American Hockey League . After another season in which the striker had also made his breakthrough in the AHL, and in the Maroon in the last playoff game in the history of the Philadelphia Phantoms in the Wachovia Spectrum , he took part in the Philadelphia Flyers training camp in the summer of 2009 . In September 2009 he was sent to the Adirondack Phantoms farm team . At the season opener in the game against the Worcester Sharks he scored a goal. During the 2009/10 season , Maroon remained 24 AHL games without scoring before he ended the series on St. Stephen's Day 2009. A few days later, the American was seriously injured and had to be transported on a stretcher.

On November 21, 2010, the Philadelphia Flyers transferred him together with David Laliberté in exchange for Rob Bordson and Danny Syvret to the Anaheim Ducks . The Californians sent Maroon to the farm team for the Syracuse Crunch , in which he built on his previous level of performance in organizing the flyers and became a reliable scorer. During the 2010/11 season , the attacker was appointed to the Anaheim Ducks' NHL squad, but not used. After his contract expired at the beginning of July 2011 and the US-American was initially available as a so-called restricted free agent , he decided on July 16, 2011 to sign a new contract for another season in the organization of the Californians. On October 25, 2011, Maroon made his debut for the Ducks in the National Hockey League when he was used in the away game with the Chicago Blackhawks and was on the ice for over 15 minutes.

After the Ducks had changed their farm team in the AHL, Maroon played mainly for the Norfolk Admirals in the 2012/13 season before he was permanently included in the NHL squad in the following season 2013/14.

After more than five years in the Ducks organization, Maroon was transferred to the Edmonton Oilers in February 2016 . In return, the Ducks received Martin Gernat and a four-round vote in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft . After the season he made his debut for the national team of his home country at the World Cup in 2016 and achieved fourth place with the team. After two years in Edmonton, the Oilers transferred him to the New Jersey Devils for the trade deadline in February 2018 and received JD Dudek and a third-round vote in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft . With the Devils, his expiring contract was not extended, so he joined the St. Louis Blues as a free agent and signed a one-year contract in his hometown. With the team he then won the Stanley Cup in the 2019 playoffs . Nevertheless, he was unable to agree on a contract extension with the Blues, so he joined the Tampa Bay Lightning as a free agent in August 2019 .
