Barclay Goodrow (born February 26, 1993 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League since February 2020 and plays for them in the position of winger . Prior to that, he spent nearly six years in the San Jose Sharks organization .
Career
youth
Barclay Goodrow was born in Toronto and grew up in Aurora, about 25 miles away . His father John Goodrow operated Canadian football and was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts , but did not get beyond the team at the University of Toronto . He later worked as an accountant while Barclay's mother was a nurse.
In his youth Barclay Goodrow played for the York Simcoe Express and the Villanova Knights , before he was selected in 2009 in the Priority Selection of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in ninth overall position by the Brampton Battalion . Thus, the right winger ran at the beginning of the 2009/10 season in one of the top three Canadian junior leagues, in which he scored 19 points in 63 games in his debut season . In addition, he represented the U17 national team of Canada over the turn of the year at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2010 , where he won the silver medal with the team. Goodrow increased his personal statistics significantly in the following years and already led the team in the 2011/12 season as an assistant and a year later as team captain . Nevertheless, the Canadian was not considered in any of the possible NHL Entry Drafts , so he returned in the 2013/14 season as an Overage player in the team that has since been relocated to North Bay and renamed the North Bay Battalion . This season he reached the final of the J. Ross Robertson Cup with the team , but where they lost to the Guelph Storm . With 14 goals, however, Goodrow was the top scorer of the playoffs and received the second-most votes in the election for best Overage player; the Leo Lalonde Memorial Trophy ultimately went to Dane Fox .
NHL
With these achievements, he drew enough attention to sign an entry contract with the San Jose Sharks from the National Hockey League in March 2014 . This gave him directly to their farm team , the Worcester Sharks , in the American Hockey League , where he ended the season with four points from six games. The following pre-season he completed in the NHL squad of the Sharks and secured a place there, but missed the start of the new season due to a hand injury that he had sustained in the last friendly. In this respect, Goodrow made his debut in the NHL on October 30, 2014, but remained an integral part of the roster and completed a total of 60 games for the San Jose Sharks, in which he scored four goals and eight assists.
After almost six years in the organization of the Sharks, Goodrow was handed over to the Tampa Bay Lightning within the trade deadline in February 2020, including a third-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2020 . In return, San Jose received Anthony Greco and a first-round vote for the same draft.
