Career
Western Hockey League
Johnson began his career in the city of Coeur d'Alene in the third-rate US junior division Northern Pacific Hockey League . After he had been selected by the Spokane Chiefs in the eleventh round of the WHL Bantam Draft in 2005 , he only moved to the Western Hockey League two seasons later . There he was the Chiefs' most successful rookie in his 2007/08 debut season with 35 points . In the play-offs he was used in all 21 games and scored five goals and three assists. He finally led the team with a 4-0 win in the final series of the Ed Chynoweth Cup and, as a 17-year-old rookie, was named the most valuable player in the WHL play-offs . At the Memorial Cup 2008 , the team was also able to prevail and won the title by defeating hosts Kitchener Rangers .
In the following two seasons he was also able to increase his point yield in the regular season and was the Chiefs' third best scorer. For the 2010/11 season , Johnson was appointed assistant captain of the team. In the course of the season he became the first Chiefs player since 1994 to break the 100 point mark. He ended the season with 53 goals as the top scorer in the entire WHL and was second on the scorer list with 115 points. He was then voted the best player and the First All-Star Team of the Western Conference, and he was awarded the Brad Hornung Trophy as the fairest player in the league.
Professional debut in the American Hockey League
After he was not considered in the NHL Entry Draft by the teams of the National Hockey League , he was invited to the NHL training camps of the Minnesota Wild and the Phoenix Coyotes in the course of his junior career, but received no contract there. In March 2011, Johnson finally signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning as a free agent . The center was then initially sent to the Lightning farm team, the Norfolk Admirals , in the American Hockey League . He also scored his first goal in the AHL on his professional debut against the Charlotte Checkers . In March 2012 he was able to score several points in seven games in a row and was then voted AHL player of the month with 22 points from eleven games. At the end of the season Johnson was the second best rookie scorer in the league behind his teammate Cory Conacher and was elected to the AHL All-Rookie Team . After the Admirals had already completed the regular season as the best team, they also prevailed in the play-offs and won the Calder Cup . Johnson scored 14 points in as many games.
In the following season 2012/13 Johnson was able to increase his point yield in the AHL again and was the top scorer in the league with 37 goals the Willie Marshall Award . With a total of 65 points from 62 games, he was the best scorer of his team, the Syracuse Crunch . He also had the best plus / minus balance of any striker in the league. At the end of the season he was finally awarded the Les Cunningham Award as the most valuable player in the AHL and elected to the First All-Star Team . With Syracuse he moved back into the final series of the Calder Cup, but lost to the Grand Rapids Griffins there . In March 2013, he finally made his NHL debut for the Tampa Bay Lightning and scored two points in his second game against the Carolina Hurricanes .
In the 2014/15 season, Johnson made his breakthrough in the NHL. Together with Nikita Kutscherow and Ondřej Palát, he formed the triplet line (German triplet series) and scored 72 points in the regular season, placing him in first place within the team together with Steven Stamkos . In the subsequent playoffs Johnson was the top scorer with 23 points, but the team lost 4-2 to the Chicago Blackhawks in the final . After the 2016-17 season, the attacker signed a new seven-year contract in Tampa that is expected to earn him an average annual salary of $ 5 million.
