Shattenkirk was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2007 in the first round in a total of 14th place by the Colorado Avalanche from the National Hockey League . Before that, he was active for two years in the National Team Development Program of the US ice hockey association USA Hockey between 2005 and 2007 . As part of the sponsorship program, he played for the association teams in the North American Hockey League . After the draft, the defender enrolled at Boston University and played for the university team in Hockey East , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association , for three years . At the end of the 2008/09 season he and his team were champions of Hockey East and also national champions. The following year he was named team captain.

After the defender and his team were eliminated from the Hockey East semi-finals in 2010 against the University of Maine , he signed his first professional contract with the Colorado Avalanche on April 3, 2010. He ended his college career prematurely. Shattenkirk was at that time as the greatest young talent for the franchise from Denver . The short rest of the 2009/10 season he spent with the Avalanche farm team , the Lake Erie Monsters in the American Hockey League , where he was able to achieve two assist in three games.

In the 2010/11 season Shattenkirk completed his first missions for Colorado in the NHL. After performing well, he was invited to the NHL All-Star Game SuperSkills Competition as part of the All-Star Games. On February 19, 2011, the defender was transferred to the St. Louis Blues in a swap from the Avalanche along with Chris Stewart and a second-round vote for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft , Colorado received defender Erik Johnson , attacker Jay McClement as well a first-round right to vote for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. In the Blues, the offensive defender was at home in the following years. With the exception of a brief stint at TPS Turku in the Finnish SM-liiga , during the lockout at the beginning of the 2011/12 NHL season , the American played for the Blues for six years until the end of February 2017. Since his contract expired in the summer of 2017 and the Blues did not assume that they could keep him, they transferred him to the Washington Capitals together with goalkeeper Pheonix Copley . In return, St. Louis received the players Zach Sanford , Brad Malone as well as a first-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2017 and a conditional second-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2019 . In addition, they also took on 39 percent of Shattenkirk's salary for the rest of the season.

However, the capital club with Shattenkirk did not achieve the targeted success in the Stanley Cup playoffs, so that the defender only played 32 games for the Capitals. Subsequently, his expiring contract was not renewed by the Capitals, so that he joined the New York Rangers as a free agent in July 2017 and thus returned to his homeland. Shattenkirk signed a four-year contract with the Rangers, which should bring him an average annual salary of $ 6.65 million. After two below average years, however, the Broadway Blueshirts decided to buy the defender for the remaining two years of the contract (buy-out) . A little later, in early August 2019, he received a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning .

International

For his home country Shattenkirk played in the junior division for the first time at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2006 , which the Americans concluded by winning the silver medal. The defender was also part of the US squad at the 2007 U18 World Junior Championship . There he also won the silver medal. In addition, Shattenkirk was named the best defender of the tournament and voted into the All-Star Team. At the U20 Junior World Championship in 2009 , he ran for his country as an assistant captain. Although the United States ended up outside the medal ranks, Shattenkirk was the best assists among all defenders in the course of the tournament.

Shattenkirk made his first appearance for the men's team at the 2011 World Cup . The defender was used in all seven of the Americans' games, scoring three points before the team was eliminated from the tournament in the quarter-finals against the Czech selection . Three years later, he took part with the USA in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , Russia .
