Jan Rutta (born July 29, 1990 in Písek , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League since January 2019 and for their farm team, the Syracuse Crunch , in the American Hockey League plays in the position of defender .

Career

Jan Rutta played in his youth for the youth departments of HC Lasselsberger Plzeň until he moved to KLH Chomutov for the 2008/09 season. While he continued to play mainly for the U20s in the Czech Republic's highest junior league, he also made his first men's appearances, on the one hand for Chomutov in the first division , the second highest division in the country, and on the other on loan for SK Kadaň in the 1st division and for the IHC Písek from his hometown in the 2nd division . After two years with changing times between the U20s, the men's team of KLH Chomutov and other loan deals, the defender established himself in the Piráti Chomutov team at the beginning of the 2011/12 season , which - now trading under this name - was promoted to at the end of the season made the extra league.

In the top division of the Czech Republic, however, Rutta was initially not an integral part of the Piráti, so he spent the following two years on loan at SK Kadaň in the first division. After the team had been able to prevent relegation in the first season of the Extraliga, this did not succeed in the 2013/14 season, but the Piráti around Rutta in 2014/15 managed to gain direct promotion. The Czech then established himself at the extraliga level, so that he achieved his best personal statistics with 32 scorer points from 46 games in the 2016/17 season . In addition, he reached the playoff semifinals with the team, but failed there to the Bílí Tygři Liberec .

In the course of these performances, teams from North America became aware of the defender, so that he signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League (NHL) in June 2017 . There, Rutta earned a place in the Blackhawks' squad as part of the pre-season and consequently made her debut in the NHL in October 2017.

After almost a season and a half with the Blackhawks, Rutta was given up in January 2019, including a seventh-round vote for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, to the Tampa Bay Lightning , while Slater Koekkoek and a five-round vote for the same draft moved to Chicago.

International

In the junior area, Rutta represented the Czech selection at the U18 World Cup in Division I in 2008 and achieved the first place associated with the promotion to the top division. A few appearances at the U20 level followed, but without participating in a major tournament. The defender only returned to international business in 2015, when he represented his home country on the Euro Hockey Tour 2015/16 and 2016/17. He then also belonged to the Czech team, which finished seventh at the 2017 World Cup .
