Slater Koekkoek (born February 18, 1994 in Winchester , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League since January 2019 and plays there in the position of defender .
Career
Koekkoek spent part of his junior years with the Peterborough Petes in the Ontario Hockey League , for which he was active from the beginning of the 2010/11 season until January 2013. He was canceled for large parts of the 2011/12 season due to a shoulder injury. Nevertheless, he was selected in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft in tenth overall position by the Tampa Bay Lightning from the National Hockey League . In January 2013, the defender left the Petes and switched to league rivals Windsor Spitfires , for whom he was only used twice during the rest of the season, as a renewed shoulder injury ended his season prematurely. But Koekkoek finished his last year in the junior division with 53 points in 62 games.
In autumn 2014, the defender finally switched to the professional field after the Lightning had signed him in March 2013. He spent most of the 2014/15 and 2015/16 playing years in the American Hockey League with Tampa's farm team , the Syracuse Crunch . Nevertheless, he made his NHL debut for the Lightning in the course of the 2014/15 season and came to twelve missions over the course of two years. With the beginning of the 2015/16 season Koekkoek was more often in the NHL squad of the Tampas.
After almost six years in the organization of the Lightning, the defender was handed over to the Chicago Blackhawks in January 2019, including a five-round vote for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft , who in return sent Jan Rutta and a seven-round vote for the same draft to Tampa.
International
For his home country Koekkoek competed in the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2011 , the U18 Junior World Championship 2011 and the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2011 . With the exception of the world title fights, which the Canadians finished in fourth place, the defender won the gold medal with the teams.
