Zachary "Zack" Smith (born April 5, 1988 in Maple Creek , Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League since July 2019 and plays there on the position of the center . His uncle Barry Dean was also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Zack Smith began his career as a hockey player with the Swift Current Broncos , for which he was active from 2004 to 2008 in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League . He was able to convince especially in the 2007/08 season, in which he scored 80 scorer points, including 27 goals, in a total of 84 games as team captain. He then ended the 2007/08 season with the Manitoba Moose , for which he was an assist in six games in the American Hockey League . On August 14, 2008 he signed a contract as a free agent with the Ottawa Senators , who had selected him in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft in the third round as a total of 79th player. In the 2008/09 season he then played for Ottawa's farm team Binghamton Senators in the AHL. He scored 24 goals and 24 assists in 79 games. He also came on November 29, 2008 in the away game with the New York Islanders to his debut in the National Hockey League for the Ottawa Senators.

Also in the 2009/10 season Smith played mostly for the Binghamton Senators in the AHL, while he came to 21 appearances for Ottawa in the NHL. After he began the following season again at Binghamton in the AHL, he was able to earn a regular place in Ottawa in the NHL during the season. He spent the lockout of the 2012/13 season with the Frederikshavn White Hawks in Denmark.

In January 2017, Smith signed a new four-year contract in Ottawa that should earn him an average annual salary of $ 3.25 million. However, Smith only fulfilled half of this contract in Ottawa, as he was given to the Chicago Blackhawks in July 2019 in exchange for the Russian Artyom Anissimow . Smith left the franchise from the Canadian capital after a total of eleven years .
