Calvin de Haan (born May 9, 1991 in Carp , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League since June 2019 . The defender previously spent seven years with the New York Islanders and another with the Carolina Hurricanes .
Career
Ontario Hockey League
Calvin de Haan was selected in May 2007 at the Priority Selection of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) by the Oshawa Generals in the third round at a total of 50th position. The defender then completed a season with a junior team before moving up to the general's squad at the beginning of the 2008/09 OHL season. De Haan finished his rookie season in the OHL with a total of 63 points scorer in 68 completed games, which earned him a nomination for the OHL all rookie team this season. He also took part in the OHL All-Star Classic and the Top Prospects Game of the Canadian Hockey League . Following the season, the defender was selected by the New York Islanders in the first round in the first round at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft .
Subsequently, Calvin de Haan returned to the Oshawa Generals for two more seasons. The 2009/10 season was over for the defender after 34 games, as he had to undergo shoulder surgery after a fall. On May 1, 2010, de Haan signed an entry-level contract with the New York Islanders. In the following OHL season he was named team captain of the Oshawa Generals. The team reached the play-offs for the first time since the 2007/08 season ; there the generals lost to the Niagara IceDogs in the second round .
Career as a professional player
De Haan took part in the Islanders' training camp before the start of the 2011/12 NHL season , but was not nominated for the final team and sent to New York's Bridgeport Sound Tigers farm team in the American Hockey League (AHL). In December 2011 he was appointed to the Islanders' NHL squad because the team did not have enough defenders available due to numerous injuries. On December 15, de Haan finally made his debut in the National Hockey League when the Islanders played against the Dallas Stars . After that game he was sent back to the Sound Tigers. After three game days of the 2012/13 AHL season , de Haan injured himself seriously in the game between the Sound Tigers and the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins on the left shoulder, which meant he was out for the rest of the season.
In the course of the following years, de Haan established himself in the NHL squad of the Islanders until his contract was not extended after the 2017/18 season. As a result, he signed a four-year free agent contract with the Carolina Hurricanes in July 2018 that is expected to earn him an average annual salary of $ 4.55 million. After just one season, however, the Canadian was transferred to the Chicago Blackhawks together with Aleksi Saarela . As compensation, the Hurricanes received the Swedish duo Anton Forsberg and Gustav Forsling .
International
Calvin de Haan represented his home country for the first time with the Canadian U18 national team at the U18 Junior World Championship in 2009 , in which the Canadians finished fourth. He made just as many assists in six games . At the U20 Junior World Championships in 2010 and 2011 , he and his team won the silver medal after losing the final to the US national team (2010) and the Russian selection (2011).
De Haan made his debut for the Canadian senior national team at the 2017 World Cup and won the silver medal there with the team.
