Alexander Maximiliam Michael Junior Nylander Altelius (short Alexander Nylander ; born March 2, 1998 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a Swedish - Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League since July 2019 . His father Michael and brother William Nylander are also professional ice hockey players.

Career

youth

Alexander Nylander was born in Calgary when his father Michael Nylander was there for the Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League (NHL). As a result, he spent his youth partly in Sweden and partly in North America, where the family followed the stations of his father's NHL career. Furthermore, Alexander Nylander has Swedish and Canadian citizenship in this context . In 2011 the family returned to Europe, so that from then on he played in Sweden for the youth departments of SDE HF and from December 2013 for those of Södertälje SK . For the 2014/15 season, the attacker moved to AIK Ishockey , where he was mainly active in the J20 SuperElit , Sweden's highest junior league, but made his professional debut for the club's senior team in the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan later in the season .

In contrast to his brother William , who had spent all of his time in Sweden up to the NHL Entry Draft , Alexander Nylander moved back to his native Canada in the summer of 2015, to be there in his draft year for the Mississauga Steelheads in the Ontario Hockey League ( OHL) to run up. The Steelheads had previously selected him in eighth position in the CHL Import Draft . With him, his father moved to Mississauga, who had meanwhile ended his active career and acted as assistant coach for the Steelheads. In the 2015/16 season, the attacker led the steelheads and all rookies in the league in scorer points (75) and was subsequently awarded the Emms Family Award as Rookie of the Year of the OHL and also in the OHL First All-Rookie Team and Appointed to the OHL Third All-Star Team . A little later, Nylander was also honored as CHL Rookie of the Year of the entire Canadian Hockey League . Having previously the CHL Top Prospects Game had participated, which elected him Buffalo Sabers in the NHL Entry Draft in 2016 in eighth position - exactly the same position as his brother William in the previous year. He was also drawn in 53rd position by HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the 2016 KHL Junior Draft .

NHL

Just a few weeks after the draft, the Sabers provided him with an entry-level contract in July 2016 , before he switched directly to their organization for the 2016/17 season and from then on played for the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League , the Buffalos farm team . The striker spent almost the entire season there before he was called up to the Sabers' NHL squad for the first time in April 2017 and finally made his debut there in the game against the Toronto Maple Leafs for his brother William.

After further sporadic missions in the following two years, Nylander was handed over to the Chicago Blackhawks in July 2019 in exchange for Henri Jokiharju .

International

On an international level, Alexander Nylander is active for his father's home country and made his debut for the Swedish U17 selection at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2014 in November , where the team won the bronze medal. This was followed by silver medals at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2015 and the U18 World Cup in 2016 . With the Swedish U20 national team , the attacker finished fourth at the U20 World Championships in 2016 and 2017 and second place in 2018 .
