Michael Nylander (born October 3, 1972 in Stockholm ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player and current coach . The center forward completed his active career from 1989 to 2014, which was characterized by constant club changes, including 967 games in the National Hockey League . With the Swedish national team he was world champion in 1992 and 2006 . His sons William and Alexander Nylander are also ice hockey players.
Career
Michael Nylander began his career in 1989 in Sweden in the 1st division at Huddinge IK , for which he played two years. In the 1991 NHL Entry Draft he was selected by the Hartford Whalers in the third round at position 59. Shortly thereafter, he moved to the Elitserien , the top division in Sweden, to AIK Stockholm and was chosen after the season to Årets nykomling of the Elitserien. After just a year at AIK, Nylander went to North America.
The 1992/93 season he completed mostly with the Hartford Whalers in the NHL and only had to play four games in the farm team in the AHL . During the 1993/94 season he was transferred from the Whalers to the Calgary Flames .
Since the season 1994/95 only started in January 1995 because of a lockout , Nylander played the first few months in the Finnish SM-liiga for JYP Jyväskylä , but later returned to Calgary.
In 1996 Nylander left the Calgary Flames because they could not agree on a new contract. He decided to go to the Swiss National League A and play for HC Lugano . In 36 games he scored 55 points. In the summer of 1997 he returned to the Calgary Flames and played for them for another year and a half before he was transferred to the Tampa Bay Lightning in January 1999 . He did not stay with the team for a long time and in November 1999 he was sent to the Chicago Blackhawks . In the 2000/01 season he showed his hitherto best scorer performance in the NHL with 64 points.
After playing in Chicago for nearly three years, he was again part of a transfer deal when the Blackhawks transferred him to the Washington Capitals in November 2002 . He stayed there for only a year and a half and was handed over to the Boston Bruins in March 2004 . Nylander had only been able to play 18 games during the season after sustaining a knee injury.
In the summer of 2004 Nylander was a free agent and signed a contract with the New York Rangers , but he had to wait over a year for his first appearance with his new team, as the 2004/05 NHL season was canceled due to a lockout. Instead, Nylander played in the Finnish SM-Liiga for Oulun Kärpät , as well as in the Russian Superliga for Ak Bars Kazan and SKA Saint Petersburg .
In autumn 2005, his first season with the Rangers began and also the most successful of his career. With 79 points in 81 games, he set a personal best. In the 2006/07 season he was able to surpass this again and scored 83 points, where he particularly benefited from the fact that he played with Jaromír Jágr in a row. In the playoffs he was even the top scorer of the Rangers with 13 points in ten games. However, when the Rangers signed two competitors for the center position with Chris Drury and Scott Gomez after the season , they did not extend Nylander's contract, after which he returned to the Washington Capitals.
In mid-December 2012 he briefly moved to Italy for HC Bozen , but returned to Sweden in January 2013 and subsequently played for Södertälje SK . In August of the same year he was signed by Rögle BK , for whom he played until mid-December 2013. In 2014 he returned to the AIK before ending his active career and directly taking over the position of assistant coach with the team.
Together with his son Alexander, he moved to the Mississauga Steelheads in the Canadian Ontario Hockey League for the 2015/16 season , where he also worked as an assistant for a year.
International
Nylander represented his home country in both the junior and senior level.
With the juniors he won the gold medal at the 1990 European Junior Championship and the silver medal at the 1992 World Junior Championship . In addition, Nylander was named the best striker after the Junior World Cup and was elected to the All-Star team after scoring the most points, goals and assists of all players. However, he shared the top scorer's crown with Markus Näslund , Jan Čaloun and Jarkko Varvio . Nylander also played at the 1991 World Junior Championship .
Among the seniors, Nylander completed a total of ten world championships , two Olympic Winter Games and the 1996 World Cup of Hockey between 1992 and 2010 . In 1992 and 2006 the Swedes became world champions. In addition, he won the silver medal in 1993 and 1997 and the bronze medal in 1999 , 2002 and 2010 . At the 1997 World Cup, Nylander was named Best Striker and elected to the tournament's All-Star Team; In 1993 he shared the title of Best Assistants with Andrei Chomutow , Shayne Corson , Dave Manson and Paul Kariya .
