Career
Gomez played with the Tri-City Americans during his junior years in the Western Hockey League . He was selected in the first round of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft as 27th by the New Jersey Devils . This made him the first Latino to ever be drafted in the NHL and he also became the first Latino to play in the NHL. He stayed in Tri-City for another year, playing for the United States U20 national junior team in 1998 and 1999.
From the 1999/2000 season Gomez played in the NHL for the New Jersey Devils and impressed the league in his first season with 70 points in 82 games, a value that no rookie had ever achieved with the Devils. As the best rookie of the season, he won the Calder Memorial Trophy and was elected to the NHL All-Rookie Team together with Simon Gagné and Mike York . With this outstanding performance, he also had his share of winning the Stanley Cup . Gomez stayed at a high level but struggled to match his rookie season's performances. In the 2002/03 season he won his second Stanley Cup with the Devils. He only reached the 70 points from his first season again in the 2003/04 season . The strike season 2004/05 he spent with the Alaska Aces in the ECHL , where he was voted the top scorer for the most valuable player in the league.
For the 2005/06 season he returned strongly and played his best season in which he scored 84 points scorer. In the regular 2006/07 season he could not build on the performance of the previous year, but in the playoffs he was the best player on his team with 14 points in eleven games. In the summer of 2007 he signed a contract with the New York Rangers . There he immediately earned himself a regular place and scored 16 goals in 81 games in the 2007/08 season , gave 54 assists and reached 70 points. A year later he was one of the Rangers' top scorers. On June 30, 2009 he was transferred to the Canadiens de Montréal . After the NHL lockout ended in January 2013, Gomez signed a contract with the San Jose Sharks .
For the 2013/14 season , the American was signed by the Florida Panthers , who did not renew his contract. In December 2014, he returned to the New Jersey Devils and signed a one-year contract there. During the 2014/15 season , Gomez completed the 1000th game of his NHL career. In October 2015, it became known that the St. Louis Blues had signed the attacker for the 2015/16 season after he had previously participated in their pre-season. Gomez subsequently completed 21 games for the Blues, but received less and less ice age when the injured Kyle Brodziak and Patrik Berglund returned. Finally, his contract was terminated at the end of December 2015.
In January 2016, Gomez joined the Hershey Bears from the American Hockey League on a trial basis (professional tryout contract) . The trial contract was terminated by mutual consent at the beginning of March. Just days later, the Ottawa Senators announced that they had signed Gomez until the end of the season. Then Gomez ended his active career.
After a year off the ice, he was introduced to the New York Islanders as Doug Weight's new assistant coach in May 2017 . In this role he worked until the end of the 2018/19 season.
