Tyler Myers (born February 1, 1990 in Katy , Texas ) is an American - Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League since July 2019 . Previously, the defender spent more than five years in the organization of the Buffalo Sabers , in whose jersey he was awarded the 2010 Calder Memorial Trophy as the best rookie in the NHL, and four seasons with the Winnipeg Jets .
Career
Tyler Myers was born in Texas, but moved to Calgary at the age of ten and therefore has dual citizenship. He began his career as a hockey player with the Notre Dame Midget Hounds in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League , before moving to the Kelowna Rockets during the same season , where he was active in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League from 2006 to 2009 and in won the Ed Chynoweth Cup in the 2008-09 season . With five goals and 15 assists in 22 games, the defender was voted playoff MVP . During his time with the Kelowna Rockets, he was also selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2008 in the first round as the twelfth player by the Buffalo Sabers , for whom he made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 2009/10 season . The Canadian scored his first NHL goal on October 16, 2009 in the game against the New York Islanders . After the end of the 2009/10 season, he was voted Rookie of the Year and won the Calder Memorial Trophy .
On October 13, 2012, the Austrian EBEL club EC KAC announced the commitment of Tyler Myers for the period of the NHL lockout taking place at that time.
In February 2015, the Buffalo Sabers including Drew Stafford , the two young players Brendan Lemieux and Joel Armia and a first-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2015 gave him to the Winnipeg Jets and in return received Evander Kane , Zach Bogosian and the rights to young goalkeeper Jason Kasdorf . At that time Buffalo had three voting rights for the first round of drafts , with the Jets receiving the lowest voting rights, which depends on the performance of the current season of the St. Louis Blues and the New York Islanders .
After four years in Winnipeg, Myers joined the Vancouver Canucks as a free agent in July 2019 , with whom he signed a five-year contract that should earn him an average annual salary of $ 6 million.
International
For Canada he took part in the U18 Junior World Championship in 2008 and U20 Junior World Championship in 2009 , where he and his team were both world champions. At the 2010 Ice Hockey World Championship he was in the senior team of Team Canada for the first time.
