Drew Stafford (born October 30, 1985 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) is an American ice hockey player who was last under contract with the New Jersey Devils from the National Hockey League until July 2019 and played for them on the position of right winger .
Career
As a junior, Stafford first played for the St. Albert Bantam AA Flyers from St. Albert in the province of Alberta . He ended the 1999/2000 season as the third best scorer in the league with 26 goals and 21 assists in 30 league games. At the end of the season, he was selected to attend a Hockey Alberta talent training camp .
Another station in his junior years was the Shattuck St. Mary's , the ice hockey team of his high school, in Faribault , Minnesota . After high school he moved to the University of North Dakota , where he played three years for the North Dakota Fighting Sioux in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . After the first year of college he was selected in the first round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft in 13th place by the Buffalo Sabers from the National Hockey League . The striker stayed at the university for two more years and was offered a contract by the Sabers in the summer of 2006 for his performance in college ice hockey and internationally - he represented his home country at the 2006 World Cup - and he signed it.
His professional career began with the farm team of the Sabers, the Rochester Americans , in the American Hockey League . In the first eleven games of the season he scored nine points, so that those responsible for the Sabers noticed him and appointed him to the NHL squad in early November. On November 5, 2006 he made his debut in the NHL against the New York Rangers and gave the template for the game-winning goal by Daniel Brière . On November 11, 2006, he scored his first goal in the NHL against the Philadelphia Flyers . In the following years he established himself within the team and increased his points yield from season to season. In September 2009 he received a new contract that tied him to the franchise until 2011 .
After nine years in Buffalo, the Sabers gave him to the Winnipeg Jets in February 2015, along with Tyler Myers , the two young players Brendan Lemieux and Joel Armia and a first-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2015 and received in return Evander Kane , Zach Bogosian and the rights to young goalkeeper Jason Kasdorf . At that point, Buffalo had three franchises for the first round of drafts , with the Jets receiving the lowest franchise that depended on how the St. Louis Blues and New York Islanders performed in the current season . After a little over two years in Winnipeg, the Jets handed him over to the Boston Bruins for the trade deadline on March 1, 2017 , and in return received a success-based six- round vote for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft .
The Bruins did not extend the Canadian's expiring contract after the end of the 2016/17 season , so he signed a one-year contract with the New Jersey Devils as a free agent in August 2017 . This was initially not extended in the summer of 2018 after completion, but Stafford subsequently recommended himself as part of the pre-season for another one-year contract in New Jersey. Since summer 2019 he has again the status of a free agent.
