Joel Armia (born May 31, 1993 in Pori ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Canadiens de Montréal from the National Hockey League since June 2018 and plays for them in the position of right winger .
Career
Joel Armia began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of Porin Ässät , for whose professional team he made his debut in the SM-liiga in the 2010/11 season . In his rookie year , he scored 20 goals and provided eleven assists in a total of 53 games. He was also a loan player in four games for the Finnish U20 national team in the Mestis , the second Finnish division, on the ice and prepared three goals. He was then selected first in the KHL Junior Draft in the first round as a total of 14th player from Severstal Tscherepowez and finally in the NHL Entry Draft in the first round as a total of 16th player from the Buffalo Sabers .
After two more seasons in his home country, he moved to the Sabers organization at the beginning of the 2013/14 season and spent the year with their farm team , the Rochester Americans , in the American Hockey League . He also made his debut in the NHL in December 2014.
In February 2015, the Buffalo Sabers including Drew Stafford , Tyler Myers and Brendan Lemieux and a first-round vote for the 2015 NHL Entry Draft gave him to the Winnipeg Jets and in return received Evander Kane , Zach Bogosian and the rights to young goalkeeper Jason Kasdorf . At this point Buffalo had three voting rights for the first round of drafts , with the Jets receiving the lowest voting rights, which depends on the performance in the current season of the St. Louis Blues and the New York Islanders . Armia was given directly to St. John's IceCaps , the Jets' farm team, which will operate under the name Manitoba Moose from the start of the 2015/16 season . Over the course of the season, however, the attacker established himself in the NHL squad of the Jets and played there until the end of the 2017/18 season . In June 2018, the Finn was handed over to the Canadiens de Montréal together with Steve Mason as well as a seven-round vote in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft and a four-round vote in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft , who in return sent Simon Bourque to Winnipeg.
International
For Finland Armia took part in the junior division in 2011 in the U18 World Junior Championship and the U20 World Junior Championship . At the U18 World Cup, he was named one of the top three players on his team.
In 2012 and 2013 further appearances at the U20 world championships followed, in which he was the second best scorer of the tournament in 2013.
