Tomáš Tatar (born December 1, 1990 in Ilava , Czechoslovakia ) is a Slovak ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Canadiens de Montréal in the National Hockey League since September 2018 . The left winger previously spent eight years in the Detroit Red Wings organization and played briefly for the Vegas Golden Knights .
Career
Tomáš Tatar began his career in the youth teams of MHK Dubnica and already played with the U18 juniors at the age of 14. There he already demonstrated his qualities as a goalscorer and preparer, so that two years later he made his first appearances in the Slovak U20 league. In 2007 he moved to HC Dukla Trenčín , where he scored 41 goals in 42 games among the U20 juniors. Due to the achievements he recommended himself for his first professional contract, which he received in summer 2008 with HKm Zvolen from the Slovakian extra league. In 48 league games he scored 15 points, but internationally he attracted attention at the U20 World Cup in December 2008. Although he was the third youngest player in the Slovak national team , he became the best player on his team, finishing fourth in the end. With seven hits and four assists, he finished the tournament as fifth-best scorer and third-best goalscorer.
Six months later he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2009 by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round at position 60 and shortly afterwards the Kitchener Rangers secured the rights to Tatar for the Canadian junior division in the CHL Import Draft , which they did a little later to the Plymouth Whalers . In autumn Tatar took part in the training camp for the young players and also the professionals of the Red Wings and recommended himself for a three-year contract. The management of Detroit initially planned to use him in the 2009/10 season in the Canadian Junior League OHL with the Plymouth Whalers, but Tatar should first get a chance with the Grand Rapids Griffins , the farm team of the Red Wings, in the AHL . He was the first Red Wings player to make it to the Griffins in his draft year.
Although Tatar missed the first four games of the AHL season due to visa problems, he quickly proved that he had no problems finding his way in the North American professional field. On October 18, 2009, he made his debut as the youngest AHL player of the season and contributed his assist . Just a month later, he was one of the team's best players when he scored four goals in five games and prepared five more and was nominated twice in a row by his team as AHL player of the week. In December he continued his good performance and had 17 points from 22 games before he left the Griffins in the middle of the month to visit the training camp of the Slovak U20 national team in preparation for the Junior World Championship, which starts shortly after Christmas .
The 2010/11 season he started with strong performances and had scored a total of 29 points after 35 games for the Grand Rapids Griffins, so that Tatar was appointed to the NHL squad of the Detroit Red Wings on December 31, 2010. On the same day he made his debut in the NHL and scored a goal in the home game against the New York Islanders , but Detroit lost the game in overtime .
In September 2016, he represented Team Europe at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , where he finished second with the team. In July 2017, the Slovak signed a new four-year contract in Detroit that is expected to earn him an average annual salary of $ 5.3 million. However, he has already been to the Trade Deadline in February 2018 to the Vegas Golden Knights given that in return a first-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft in 2018 , a second-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft in 2019 and a third-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft in 2021 by Detroit sent. With the team he surprisingly reached the final of the Stanley Cup in the 2018 playoffs , but lost to the Washington Capitals there .
In the subsequent off-season , Tatar was handed over to the Canadiens de Montréal in September 2018 together with Nick Suzuki and a second-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2019 . In return, Max Pacioretty moved to Las Vegas.
Tomáš Tatar's strengths are his running skills and goal instinct. His biggest weakness is his small stature in the NHL field of 1.78 meters.
