The 2008/09 season of the Slovnaft Extraliga is the 16th regular staging of the top division of ice hockey in Slovakia . The reigning champions of Slovakia are HC Slovan Bratislava . Promoted to the extra league is champions of the first division, HC 05 Banská Bystrica .
Game mode
The league's game mode has been changed for the new season: After a preliminary round, which consists of 24 home and away games per participant, a two-part intermediate round follows. For the first group, the teams in places one to six qualify (automatic qualification for the play-offs), all other teams play in the second group for the remaining two places in the round of 16 of the play-offs. The four teams that do not participate in the play-offs play a playdown round. This is followed by a league relegation between the extra league and the first division, with the last placed in the playdowns against the champions and the penultimate against the runner-up in the first division. The U20 national team - under the name HK Orange 20 - does not take part in the relegation.
In addition to the change in the game system, the allocation of points will also be changed: Teams that lose in extra time or in the penalty shoot-out will now receive a point instead of none.
Attendees
The league was increased to 13 clubs before the 2008/09 season by another participant. The champions of the first division , HC 05 Banská Bystrica, were newly accepted .

Regular season
Both the preliminary round and the championship round were dominated by the two top clubs in Slovakia, HC Košice and HC Slovan Bratislava . Above all, the team from Košice showed both offensively and defensively outstanding performances, so that at the end of the season they scored the most goals, received the fewest goals against and had a positive goal difference of +88. In the championship round, the team expanded this ratio to +101 in just ten games, with only one defeat after overtime.
The HK 36 Skalica managed a similar winning streak in the championship round and worked their way up from fifth to third place and thus had home rights in the playoffs. This success was mainly made possible by the outstanding attacking duo Žigmund Pálffy - Juraj Mikúš , who top the league scorer lists in all categories.
