The 1997/98 season of the Extraliga was the fifth regular staging of the top division of ice hockey in Slovakia . In the playoff final, the HC Slovan Bratislava prevailed against the TJ VSŽ Košice with 3-2 victories and thus won the first Slovak championship title in the club's history. The league was expanded from ten to twelve participants for the following season. The two best-placed teams in the second-class 1st league , HC Banská Baystrica and HK VTJ Prešov , were promoted directly to the extra league, while the third in the 1st league, HK Spartak Dubnica against the bottom of the extra league , the MHk 32 Liptovský Mikuláš , had to compete. In the relegation for the last remaining starting place for the following season, Liptovský Mikuláš finally prevailed with 3-2 wins.
Champion of the 1997/98 season was HC Slovan Bratislava, who won the best-of-five series against TJ VSŽ Košice with 3-2 wins and won the first Slovak championship title in the club's history.
