The 1997/98 season was the fifth regular staging of the first division , the second Slovak ice hockey division . The champion was ŠK Iskra Banská Bystrica , who like the runner-up HK VTJ Prešov rose directly to the extra league. The third-placed HK Spartak Dubnica qualified for the Extraliga relegation , in which he failed, however, on HK 32 Liptovský Mikuláš . The ŠK Matador Púchov was relegated to the 2nd division.

mode

In the main round, each of the twelve teams played a total of 44 games. The two best-placed teams after the main round were automatically promoted to the Extraliga, while the third-placed team qualified for the Extraliga relegation. The bottom of the table after the main round was relegated directly to the 2nd division. Each team received two points for a win and one point for a draw. No points were awarded for a defeat after normal time.
