The 1996/97 season was the fourth regular staging of the first division , the second Slovak ice hockey division . The champion was HKm Zvolen who, like the teams in places two to four, qualified for the extra league relegation . There the HKm Zvolen and the HK 36 Skalica prevailed as the only representatives of the 1st division and rose to the extra league. The HK VTJ Piešťany rose to the 2nd division.

In the main round, each of the twelve teams played a total of 34 games. The four best-placed teams after the main round qualified for the extraliga relegation. The teams in places 5 to 12 played the only relegated in the 2nd division in a relegation round in a round trip, with the results from the main round being taken over. Each team received two points for a win and one point for a draw. No points were awarded for a defeat after normal time.
