The 2008/09 season was the 16th regular staging of the first division , the second Slovak ice hockey division . The championship was HK Spišská Nová Ves , who, like the finalist ŠHK 37 Piešťany , qualified for the Extraliga relegation . The HKM Lučenec rose to the 2nd division.

In the main round, each of the 16 teams played a total of 44 games. The four best-placed teams after the main round qualified for the playoff quarter-finals, while the teams in places 5 to 12 already started in the pre-playoffs. The bottom of the table after the main round was relegated to the 2nd division. For the other three teams, the season ended prematurely. Each team received three points for a win after regular time, two points for a win after overtime, and one point for a defeat after overtime. No points were awarded for a defeat after normal time.
