Roland Great

Roland Großer (born October 11, 1936 in Frankenberg , Saxony ; † April 8, 2016 ) was an officer in the National People's Army of the German Democratic Republic . Most recently he held the rank of major general .

Military career

As the son of an art glass, Großer joined the armed organs of the GDR as a professional soldier after graduating from high school on August 12, 1954 and was an officer student at the artillery school in Dresden until 1957 . In 1957 he joined the SED . From 1959 to 1961 he served as platoon leader in Artillery Regiment 5 and then remained without a post until 1962. In 1963 he was delegated to a military academy in the Soviet Union . After his return to the GDR, Großer became a senior officer for missiles and ammunition in the command of Military District V in 1968, and in 1971 he was deputy to the commander of the missile service of the 5th Missile Brigade . From 1974 to 1976, Großer attended the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR "KJ Voroshilov" . After his return to the GDR, he became the commander of the 5th Missile Brigade in 1976. He held this post until 1980. From 1980 to 1987 he was chief missile troops and artillery in the command of Military District V, where he was appointed major general on October 7, 1983 . From January 1, 1988 to September 14, 1990, he was the successor to Günther Bormann, Deputy Chief LaSK and Chief Rocket Forces and Artillery in the Land Forces Command and, for a few weeks, from September 15 to October 2, 1990, Deputy Chief LaSK and Chief of Staff as well in command of land forces (successor to Lothar Engelhardt ).

Großer was a holder of the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze as well as various other orders and decorations . Großer died at the age of 79 and was buried in the cemetery in Geltow .
