The 2015/16 season was the 23rd regular staging of the highest Slovak ice hockey league , the Tipsport Extraliga . As in the previous season, eleven teams took part in the game, with the Slovak U20 national team again playing out of valuation as HK Orange 20. The Slovak champion was HK Nitra , who defeated HC 05 Banská Bystrica in the playoff final with 4-2 wins in the best-of-seven series. The HK 36 Skalica stopped playing in February 2016 and withdrew to the second-class first division at the end of the season .

In the main round, each of the ten regular teams play a total of 56 games. The eight best-placed teams qualify for the playoffs in which the champions are played out. In addition to the regular participants, the Slovak U20 national team also competes as a visiting team under the name HK Orange 20 against every league participant in a return leg, whereby the games of the HK Orange 20 are not valued. The last two placed in the main round must compete in the relegation against the two finalists of the 1st division .

Each team receives three points for a win after regular time, two points for a win after overtime or shootout, one point for a loss after overtime or shootout and zero points for a loss after regular time.

Main round

In February 2016, the HK 36 HANT Skalica withdrew from the Extraliga, as the club could no longer provide a competitive team due to financial problems. All of the club's games were canceled, bringing the total number of games per participant to 50.

Relegation

In the relegation between the Extraliga and the 1st League , the last two places in the Extraliga and the two finalists in the 1st League were originally supposed to take part. Due to the withdrawal of HK 36 Skalica , only one Extraliga team took part in the relegation. The ŠHK 37 Piešťany remained in second place in the extra league , while the HC Nové Zámky rose to this.
