The 2001/02 season of the Extraliga was the ninth regular staging of the top division of ice hockey in Slovakia . In the playoff final, HC Slovan Bratislava prevailed against HKm Zvolen with 4-2 wins and thus won the third Slovak championship title in the club's history. The MHC Nitra had to take part in the relegation due to the last place in the main round and ultimately relegated to the second-class first division . The team was replaced by the second division champions HK Spišská Nová Ves .

Relegation

In the relegation between the Extraliga and the 1st League, the last-placed club in the Extraliga, the MHC Nitra , met the champions of the 1st League, the HK Spišská Nová Ves . The latter prevailed with 4-2 wins and rose to the extra league, while the team of the MHC Nitra was relegated to the second division.
