Branislav Mezei (born October 8, 1980 in Nitra , Czechoslovakia ) is a Slovak ice hockey player who has been under contract with HK Nitra in the Slovakian extra league since October 2014 .

Career

Branislav Mezei began his career as a hockey player in the youth of HK Nitra , where he was active until 1997. He then played for three years for the Belleville Bulls in Canada's top junior league, the Ontario Hockey League . During this period he was selected in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft in the first round as the tenth player overall by the New York Islanders .

For the Islanders he made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 2000/01 season . In his rookie year , the defender scored five scorer points, including one goal, in 42 games. In the following season he was another two templates in 24 NHL missions. During his two years in New York, the left shooter also ran for their farm teams from the American Hockey League , the Lowell Lock Monsters and Bridgeport Sound Tigers . On July 3, 2002, Mezei was given in exchange for Jason Wiemer to the Florida Panthers , for whom he played for the next six years. Only during the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season he was in Europe for HC Oceláři Třinec in the Czech Extra League and HC Dukla Trenčín in the Slovak Extra League on the ice. In the summer of 2008, the Slovak was signed by Barys Astana from the newly founded Continental Hockey League . After only one season in Astana, Mezei first moved to HC Plzeň in the Czech Extra League, where he was on the ice in 18 league games. In late October 2009 he was signed by the Espoo Blues , who reacted to their defensive weakness.

In June 2010 Mezei was signed by HC Pardubice . For the 2011/12 season he joined the Slovak KHL newcomer HC Lev Poprad .

In August 2014, Mezei moved within the KHL to KHL Medveščak Zagreb , where he signed a one-year contract. After only eight games for the club, his contract was terminated by mutual agreement and returned to his home club, HK Nitra, in late October 2014.

International

For Slovakia Mezei took part in the Under-20 Junior World Championships in 1999 and 2000 in part. In addition, he was in the squad Slovakia at the World Championships in 2001 , 2004 and 2008 , and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey .
