The HK Barys only Sultan (2019 Barys Astana ; Kazakh ХК Барыс Нұр-Сұлтан ; Russian ХК Барыс Нур-Султан ) is a hockey club from the Kazakhstan capital only Sultan . The club was founded in 1999 and has been playing in the Continental Hockey League since the 2008/09 season . The club's second team plays in the Kazakh championship .
history
The club was founded in 1999 and initially played in the third highest Russian division and in the Wysschaja Liga , the second highest Russian division. In the latter, the team was promoted in 2007 to immediately reach second place in the championship. In addition, the Kazakh championship won the first title in the same season. Due to the second place in the Vysschaya League and the available financial resources, the team will play in the Continental Hockey League from the 2008/09 season.
In the season 2008/09 occupied Barys, after all three last matches were won, still 15th place in the preliminary round and thus qualified for the play-offs, where the team in the round of 16 against Ak Bars Kazan after three defeats as the loser proved. In the following season 2009/10 , the team was able to conquer sixth place in the main round in the east. In the play-offs, the team from Kazan was again the stronger in the round of 16. As in the previous year, all three comparisons were lost, but the first meeting was only decided in the 106th minute. Furthermore, the absence of captain Kevin Dallman made itself felt, who was suspended for three games after the last game of the main round. In the 2010/11 season , the team finished seventh in the Eastern Conference, although the team had to complete a much more crowded schedule due to the 2011 Asian Winter Games - for which Barys had to assign 15 players for the Kazakh national ice hockey team. In the following play-offs, as in previous years, the club failed in the round of 16 against Ak Bars Kazan. In the best-of-seven mode, Astana lost 4-0.
The second team played in the Kazakh championship from 2009 and became runner-up in the 2010/11 season. The second team has been running under the name Nomad Astana since 2013 .
Under the name Snezhnye Barsy Astana , a junior team plays in the Russian-dominated junior league Molodjoschnaja Chokkeinaja Liga . In the course of the renaming of the Kazakh capital as Nur-Sultan in 2019, the international name also changed to Barys Nur-Sultan .

Venues
The team played their home games in the Kazakhstan Sports Palace , which was built in 2001 and has a capacity of 5,332 . In 2012, work began on the Barys Arena with 12,000 seats for ice hockey games. The hall should be usable in the 2015/16 season. On August 9, 2015, the new ice arena was opened with a game between the home team and Metallurg Novokuznetsk . Barys won the game 4-2.
