The 2008/09 season was the 17th season of the Kazakh ice hockey professional league . The preliminary round started with five teams. In the final round, three more were added, which were actually based in the leagues of the Russian Ice Hockey Association . Barys Astana secured the title of Kazakh Master . So the club from the capital to defend the title, the team in the previous year had won the first time. At the same time, the Kazakh Ice Hockey Cup was held for the seventh time , won by HK Kasachmys Satpajew .

In the preliminary round, five teams - including the second representatives from Barys Astana and Kaszink-Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk - played the three free places for the final round. The teams did not play a fixed number of games. Nevertheless, the three teams with the most points qualified. There was no qualification based on a point coefficient.

The three qualifiers from the preliminary round met in the final round on Barys Astana from the Continental Hockey League and the two Wysschaja League participants Kaszink-Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk and HK Saryarka Karaganda . The three teams that had spent the season in the leagues of the Russian Ice Hockey Association had already been set for the final round.

In the final round, the six participants played for the title of Kazakh champion in a single round with five games per team .

For a win in the regular playing time of 60 minutes, a team received three points, the defeated opponent received nothing. When winning in overtime or in the shootout , a team only received two points, while the loser still received one point.

Championship course

Preliminary round

HK Kasachmys Satpajew , Gornjak Rudny and HK Irtysch Pawlodar prevailed in the preliminary round . Satpajew and Rudny both did not lose points, but did not meet each other in their ten and six games respectively. The two reserve teams of the big clubs from Ust-Kamenogorsk and Astana had no chance and clearly missed the final round.

Final round

In the final round, which took place in Pavlodar between March 26th and 31st, a head-to-head race between Barys Astana and Kaszink-Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk emerged until the last day of the match . The decisive game between the two previously undefeated teams was decided by Astana 4: 3 in the penalty shoot- out. The third seeded participant, HK Saryarka Karaganda , disappointed with fourth place and played no role in the championship race.
