Maxim Wladimirowitsch Spiridonow ( Russian Максим Владимирович Спиридонов ; born April 7, 1978 in Moscow , Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian ice hockey player who was last under contract with Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod in the Continental Hockey League in January 2014 .
Career
Maxim Spiridonow began his career as an ice hockey player in Russia and, at the age of 18, moved to the London Knights in North America. For the Knights he was active in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League from 1996 to 1998 . He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1998 in the ninth round as a total of 241st player by the Edmonton Oilers , for which he never played. Instead, he played in the 1998/99 season for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the International Hockey League and the Springfield Falcons in the American Hockey League . The following season he began with the Tallahassee Tiger Sharks from the East Coast Hockey League , before moving to the Hamilton Bulldogs from the AHL towards the end of the 1999/2000 season, for which he was also on the ice the following year.
In the summer of 2001 Spiridonow returned to his Russian homeland, where he ran up in the following two years for one season each in the super league for Salawat Julajew Ufa and Amur Khabarovsk . In the 2002/03 season at Amur he was the top scorer in the league with 21 goals. After he started the 2003/04 season at Lokomotive Yaroslavl , he finished it at his ex-club from Khabarovsk. It was followed by a season each at Severstal Tscherepowez and the reigning champions HK Dynamo Moscow , before the left-handed shooter moved to the 2006/07 season for Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod in the second-rate Wysschaja Liga , with which he became second division champions. He then got the opportunity to return to the first division, where he began the 2007/08 season at Metallurg Novokuznetsk . However, he left this again after only 19 games to join the EHC Basel from the Swiss National League A , where he did not extend his contract after its relegation.
For the 2008/09 season Spiridonow signed a contract with Barys Astana from the Continental Hockey League . For the Kazakhs, the winger scored 43 points in a total of 52 games. In 2010 he moved to league rivals HK Dinamo Minsk together with Jozef Stümpel and Konstantin Glasatschow . Another year later, Spiridonow moved to HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk with Glasatschow , while Stümpel went to HK Spartak Moscow . In November 2011 he was transferred again within the KHL, this time to Ak Bars Kazan .
In the summer of 2012 Spiridonow returned to Barys Astana and played for Barys until November 2013 in the KHL. Then he was briefly under contract with Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod. From January 2014 he was without a club and finally ended his career in summer 2015.
