Kevin Jonathan Dallman ( Russian Кевин Джонатан Даллмэн ; born February 26, 1981 in Niagara Falls , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player with Kazakh citizenship. During his career, he played 154 games in the National Hockey League for the Boston Bruins , St. Louis Blues and Los Angeles Kings . Between 2008 and 2019 he played in the Continental Hockey League for Barys Astana and SKA Saint Petersburg and was the highest point defender in KHL history when his career ended in August 2019. After receiving Kazakh citizenship in 2013, he participated in three world championships and two Olympic qualifying tournaments with the Kazakh national team.
Career
Kevin Dallman began his career in 1996 in the Ontario Junior Hockey League with the Niagara Falls Flyers, before joining the Guelph Storm in 1998 in the Ontario Hockey League . In the summer of 2002, the defender dared the leap into the professional field and signed a contract with the Boston Bruins from the National Hockey League , who used the defender until 2005 with their farm team , the Providence Bruins from the American Hockey League . In the 2005/06 season Dallman completed 21 games for the Boston Bruins and 46 games for the St. Louis Blues , who had selected him in December 2005 from the waiver list. Another station in the National Hockey League were the Los Angeles Kings , where he completed a total of 87 games in two seasons from 2006 to 2008 and scored four goals.
The defender was under contract with Barys Astana from Kazakhstan from July 2008. In the 2008/09 season he completed 53 games in the preliminary round and posted 58 points scorer (28 goals and 30 assists) and 117 penalty minutes. Thus, Dallman became the best scorer of his team and the fifth best scorer in the entire league. There were also three games in the play-off round of 16, where he received eight penalty minutes and scored an assist.
After three years in Kazakhstan, there were discussions about naturalizing Dallman so that he could play for the national team. Ultimately, Dallman initially decided against naturalization. His family was expelled from Kazakhstan in April 2012 after his wife criticized the corruption in the country. In addition, a three-year contract offer to Dallman was withdrawn. One month later, President von Barys, Nurlan Orabaev, justified the withdrawal of the contract extension with sporting reasons and excessive wages.
From the end of May 2012, Dallman was under contract with SKA Saint Petersburg for two years, but - especially in his second season - was unable to match the performances shown. After his contract with the SKA expired, he returned to Astana and signed a three-year contract with Barys. In 2015 he was nominated again for the KHL All-Star Game.
After 620 KHL games in which he had collected 431 points (142 goals and 289 assists), Dallmann ended his career in August 2019.
International
After the native Canadian had received the right to play for the Kazakh national team , Dallman and the team took part in the qualification for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi in February 2013 . The defender was used in all three games and booked three assists. The team narrowly failed to Latvia and ultimately missed qualifying for the tournament. He also played for Kazakhstan in the Olympic qualification for the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang . There the Kazakhs were able to narrowly beat hosts Norway (4: 3 after extra time) and Italy (3: 2), but lost 4: 1 against France , so that in the end the Norwegians reached the qualification by beating France.
At the 2014 World Cup , he had to accept relegation from the top division with the Kazakh team, but was able to return to the top division of the World Cup in the following year by winning the A group in Division I. As the best defender of the tournament and top scorer - together with his compatriots Roman Startschenko , Konstantin Rudenko , Evgeni Rymarew and Wadim Krasnoslobodzew as well as the Hungarian Andrew Sarauer - he made a significant contribution to the immediate resurgence and was consequently elected to the all-star team of the tournament . After the Kazakhs were relegated without him in 2016, he played again in Division I in 2017 .
