The Barys Arena ( Kazakh and Russian Барыс Арена ) is a multi-purpose hall in the Kazakh capital Nur-Sultan . The hall has been the home of the Barys Nur-Sultan ice hockey club in the Continental Hockey League (KHL) since 2015 . The team previously competed in the Sports Palace in Kazakhstan .

history

The construction of the Barys Arena started in October 2012 and was officially opened on August 8, 2015 by President Nursultan Nazarbayev . The following day, Barys Astana played the first game against Metallurg Novokuznetsk in the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan's Cup and won 4-2. It offers 12,000 seats (including 744 VIP seats) to visitors to ice hockey games. In addition to ice hockey, the arena can also be used for sports such as basketball , volleyball or boxing as well as for concerts and other cultural events. The complex includes u. a. a hockey academy, a swimming pool with a 50-meter lane and 10 lanes, a diving pool for art and tower diving and a pool for synchronized swimming , all of which meet the guidelines of the FINA world swimming association .

An accident occurred on July 13, 2015 during the construction work. While dismantling scaffolding on the facade, six Kosovar workers fell twenty meters. Five of the six men did not survive the accident. Three died at the scene of the accident and two in hospital. The construction work has been temporarily suspended.
