life and work

Rosemary Rogers grew up as the first-born daughter of Barbara "Allan" and Cyril Jansz in Ceylon. The parents were Dutch-Portuguese immigrants and ran three private schools in Ceylon. After studying at the University of Ceylon (1949–1952), she worked as a newspaper reporter and in 1954 married the track and field athlete and rugby player Summa Navaratnam. The marriage resulted in two daughters.

The marriage broke up and in 1960 Rogers moved with the children to London, where she met the GI Leroy Rogers. Rogers followed him to his hometown, St. Louis , where he married, and followed him to Fairfield , California, where two sons were born. When the connection broke up in 1968, she and her four children got by on the modest income of a county authority typist .

During this time, she completed the manuscript of a novel she had been working on since her youth and submitted it to Avon Books , a publisher that invented a new concept of romance in 1972 without the detour traditionally used in the industry mass-produced directly as a cheap paperback edition via an expensive hardcover edition. Avon accepted the book, and with the encouragement of editor-in-chief Nancy Coffey, Sweet Savage Love (1974) - a bodice ripper dressed up in a western - became one of the most popular romance novels in history. A special feature that Rogers introduced in the modern romance novel were explicit depictions of sexual acts, often in the form of sultry, palpable scenarios, which are characterized in English as “forced seduction” and - because the female heroine is Being overwhelmed is resentful, but definitely enjoys - the term “ rape ” cannot be adequately described. By 1999, Rogers had published 15 other romance novels on Avon, many of which sold millions of copies. Rogers continued to write mainly westerns, but also tried his hand at other sub-genres such as contemporary romance novels ( The Crowd Pleasers , The Insiders , Love Play ) and historical novels that were set in Great Britain or Asia ( The Tea Planter's Bride , Midnight Lady ) .

A third marriage that Rogers entered into in September 1984 with the poet Christopher Kadison lasted only a short time. 2000 - Bodice Rippers were no longer selling well at this point - Rogers separated from Avon Books and switched to Mira Verlag, where she published seven more historical romance novels. Since 2008 she has published her work with the Canadian Harlequin Publishing House.

Rogers first lived and worked in Connecticut , most recently in California , where she died in November 2019.
