The Steel Aréna (full name: Steel Aréna - Košický štadión Ladislava Trojáka ) is a multi-purpose arena in the Juh district of the second largest Slovak city of Košice , which is mainly used as an ice rink . It is located on Nerudova Street, around one km southwest of St. Elisabeth Cathedral . The hall currently offers 8,347 seats and 40 boxes. The arch supporting the roof has a length of 133.8 m. A video cube with four large LED screens and four smaller LED screens as well as two LED rings above and below the large displays hangs under the ceiling of the hall .

history

The history of the ice rink begins with the opening of a public ice rink in 1868. It was covered in autumn 1964. The last game in the old ice rink took place on March 29, 1996. After that, a renovation began, but was stopped in 1998 for financial reasons. Construction work only continued in April 2005; the ceremonial opening took place on February 24, 2006. The hall bears the name of the main sponsor of the ice hockey club HC Košice , US Steel Košice, and the name of Ladislav Troják , who was the first Slovak to join the Czechoslovak national team and in 1947 to become the first Slovak world champion.

In addition to the Zimný štadión Ondreja Nepelu in the capital Bratislava, the Steel Aréna was the venue for the 2011 Men's Ice Hockey World Championship . At the 2019 World Cup , the two halls will once again serve as the tournament venues. Also in 2019 the hall is planned to host the street hockey world championship from June 14th to 22nd . The European handball championship is scheduled to take place in Hungary and Slovakia in January 2022 . The preliminary round matches of the tournament are to be played in Košice.
