Willem Buys
Willem Buys (born May 27, 1661 in Amsterdam (?); † February 18, 1749 ) was an important Dutch politician of the 18th century .
Biographical
Willem Buys studied at the Universities of Leiden and Orléans , and in 1684 was employed as a lawyer at the Dutch court " Hof van Holland ". In 1691 he became "City Judge of Amsterdam".
In 1704 he acted as an intermediary between the Dutch states of Friesland and Groningen and their counterparty, the states of Holland and Zeeland . The reason for his intervention was the dispute between these states over the appointment of Johann Wilhelm Friso von Nassau-Dietz as governor of the Republic of the United Netherlands .
Willem Buys was also the official envoy of the Netherlands abroad, where he was able to improve diplomatic relations with Great Britain. As Dutch plenipotentiary he also took part in the peace negotiations at the Peace of Utrecht in 1713. Buys also had good contacts with the Whigs , and was therefore commissioned to oversee the political activities of Queen Anne Stuart .
In 1714 he was sent to France together with Sicco van Goslinga as the Dutch envoy . Here, his good knowledge of the French language promoted him. Buys also signed a treaty on free trade and shipping with Spain . In 1723 he was sent to the Danish court as an envoy .
When the ailing council pensioner Anthonie van der Heim was on cure in Spa , Buys ran the official business of Holland during the years.
1706 Buys was accepted as a member ( Fellow ) in the Royal Society .
