Sicco van Goslinga
Sicco van Goslinga (* 1664 in Herbaijum , Friesland , † September 18, 1731 in Dongjum ) was an important Frisian politician and diplomat . He came from the noble family of the Goslinga , was for over forty years Councilor of the States of Friesland and the Dutch States General . Goslinga worked as ' Gedeputeerde te Velde' (political commissioner) of the States General of the Republic of the Seven United Provinces of the Netherlands , together with John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough in Flanders and in the War of the Spanish Succession . His memoirs give important information about the history of this period.
Private
Sicco van Goslinga studied at the University of Franeker and the University of Utrecht . In 1692 he married Jeanette Isabelle Barones thoe Schwartzenberg and Hohenlansberg , vrijvrouwe von Ameland . This marriage gave birth to five daughters, including Dodonea Lucia van Goslinga (* 1702), who married Count Unico Wilhelm van Wassenaer (1692–1766) in 1723 . Sicco van Goslinga's grave can be found in the church of Dongjum . His grave monument was made by the Flemish sculptor Johann Baptist Xavery . In 1857 his "Mémoires relatifs à la guerre de succession de 1706–1709 et 1712" were published.
Political
In 1688 he succeeded his father Johan van Goslinga as Grietman von Franekeradeel , an office which he held until his death. As Grietman he was a member of the Frisian States. As a “classic Dutch regent” he performed many different functions within the province of Friesland. He appeared as a frequent deputy of Friesland at the Raad van State and in the Dutch States General .
As a member of the Raad van State (the most important executive body in the military field in the period of the second governorless period ) he was between 1706 and 1711 Frisian deputy at the field headquarters of John Churchill . He was commissioned to advise the Duke of Marlborough, and also to monitor his (military) actions. This consensus was created in 1702 when the Duke of Marlborough was named "luitenant-kapitein-generaal van het leger van de Republiek (the Netherlands)". Goslinga thus had the right to veto tactical matters . But Goslinga was cooperative with Marlborough and made a contribution to the Dutch successes in the field battles of Ramillies , Oudenaarde and Malplaquet .
Goslinga acted as agent of the Dutch Republic for the Peace of Utrecht . After the peace treaties, Goslinga was sent to the French court of Louis XIV in 1714 . There he worked together with the Dutch ambassador and later pensioner Willem Buys for a good relationship between the two countries. As an Orange partisan, in 1719 he pushed ahead with the appointment of Willem IV as governor of Groningen . In 1728 he represented together with Cornelis Hop de Republiek at the Congress of Soissons , in which, among other things, the political status of Gibraltar was discussed.
