Jacob Gilles was the first Haarlem pensioner who was also elected council pensioner for Holland and West Friesland. He held this office from September 23, 1746 to June 18, 1749. Gilles was a so-called state - minded politician, that is, he was against the reinstatement of the House of Orange-Nassau as governor of the Republic of the United Netherlands . In 1747 he had to endure it in silence that Wilhelm IV., A new " heir " from the House of Orange-Nassau, was named.
