Ypenburg, a VINEX residential area

Ypenburg is a district ( Dutch wijk ) of The Hague in the Netherlands , which belongs to the district (Dutch stadsdeel ) Leidschenveen-Ypenburg . Ypenburg mainly consists of an extensive residential area that was built in 1997 and a somewhat older industrial area (called Forepark ).

The settlement was built on the site of the former airfield, which was put into operation in 1936 and played an important role in the Second World War due to its direct proximity to the government center in The Hague, when units of German Army Group B die on May 10, 1940 as part of the German western offensive attacked neutral Netherlands . The target of the attack were the fortress Holland and the capture of the government center in The Hague. The Germans conquered the area with a large-scale deployment of parachute and airborne troops , while the German 18th Army attacked with ground troops.

After the war, the airfield was initially used for national civil air traffic, but was never modernized or expanded into an international airport, instead it slowly developed into a relatively insignificant place, which was closed on September 20, 1992. From 1997 a so-called VINEX satellite town was built in the area , on which around 30,000 people were already living after almost ten years. In accordance with the VINEX philosophy and in order to create a sustainable social structure, the complex contains apartments and houses of all sizes and price ranges, a certain proportion of social housing as well as houses of the luxury class, everything in the form of property or rent. In parallel with the construction of the residential buildings, the appropriate infrastructure was provided. The area is served by two tram lines and has motorway connections. Kindergartens, schools, several small shopping centers and sports facilities were built.

In 2002, Ypenburg came to The Hague as a result of a municipal reform carried out by the Province of South Holland and since then, together with Leidschenveen, forms the Hague district of Leidschenveen-Ypenburg. The areas in question had previously belonged to the municipalities of Rijswijk and Pijnacker-Nootdorp .
