Knight Adriaan Pauw ( November 1, 1585 - February 21, 1653 ) was a Dutch politician and aristocrat. He came from the Pauw family , an important noble patrician family of the Golden Age , and held the titles of Vrijheer von Heemstede , Heeren von Bennebroek and Nieuwerkerk .

Life

In 1613 the eldest son of Reinier Pauw - who was a pensioner and mayor of Amsterdam as well as a trusted councilor of the governor Moritz von Orange-Nassau - was ennobled by the English king James I. Since 1611 he was a pensioner of the city of Amsterdam, from 1627 councilor and arithmetic master of the Dutch provinces of Holland and West Friesland . He was on a diplomatic mission in Europe since 1618, in 1634 he concluded, among other things, the state alliance that regulated France's entry into the Thirty Years' War against Spain . Between 1631 and 1636 Pauw was the council pensioner ( Raadpensionaris ) of the Dutch Republic .

In 1643 Pauw took part in the negotiations for the Peace of Westphalia in Munster as a deputy for Holland , where he is regarded as the most important envoy from the Netherlands . In the well-known painting by Gerard ter Borch , he can be seen with his wife and granddaughter in a six-horse carriage with three pioneers.

In 1647 Pauw, Andries Bicker and the inner circle of power of the states of Holland came out for the first time for a drastic reduction of the Dutch armed forces (under the orders of the Orange governor). In 1651 Pauw became a council pensioner again. He died on February 21, 1653 and was buried in Heemstede . His large private library, Bibliotheca Heemstediana, with around 16,000 books was auctioned. The Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel received a small part .

His son Adriaen Pauw (1622-1697) was councilor and president of the Dutch court of justice - the Hof van Holland - and in 1672, the Rampjaar , was responsible for the litigation against Cornelis de Witt .
