history

Around 1290 Reynier van Holy built a castle on the Spaarne river called Heemstede (Heimstatt). There is not much left of this castle today, it is called the old castle . A village developed around the castle in the 14th century.

Through donations and purchases, the Heemstede glory reached an extent that encompassed the area of today's parish of the same name and the parish of Bennebroek .

In 1620 Pieter van Ruytenburgh, Dirck de Vlaming van Oudshoorn and Jacob Bicker sold their share of the glory for 36,000 guilders to the Dutch pensioner Adriaan Pauw . He made the castle his summer residence, expanded it and bought an expensive collection of tulip bulbs. He built waterways, a school and a church. Thanks to the clean water, laundries and bleachers settled in: The laundry of the rich citizens of Amsterdam, Haarlem and Leiden was washed, ironed and bleached in Heemstede.

In 1648 Pauw went to the negotiations of the Peace of Westphalia in Münster as a Dutch envoy . After his return he built the Pons pacis (Peace Bridge ) over the moat, which can still be seen today. After his death in 1653 , Bennebroek was split off as its own glory.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Heemstede became increasingly popular as a summer residence for the wealthy merchants of the neighboring towns. In the 19th century, the French occupation and later the advent of the steam engine created considerable problems for the local laundries: more and more jobs were lost. In the middle of the 19th century Heemstede increasingly became a center of flower bulb cultivation. In 1850, 2332 people lived in 285 houses in Heemstede.

The development of the "dormitory city" began at the beginning of the 20th century with the expansion of the railway ( Heemstede-Aerdenhout station ) and tram, between 1900 and 1940 many new residential buildings were built.
