Willem Vester (born January 31, 1824 in Heemstede , † July 12, 1895 in Haarlem ) was a Dutch landscape and animal painter .

life and work

Vester was born the son of a master mason from Heemstede. He was trained in Haarlem from 1840 to 1843 with the artist Jan Jacob Spöhler (1811–1866). He joined the Haarlem artists' association "Art Zij Ons Doel", where he met Anton Mauve .

He exhibited frequently and took part several times in the annual “Tentoonsttelling van Levende Meesters” (Exhibition of the Living Masters). He mainly painted summer and winter landscapes, often with cows and cattle, later also with figures and buildings. More rarely he also painted portraits and cityscapes.

In order to earn a living, Vester also worked as a house and carriage painter and later also as a photographer. He was the teacher of his daughter Gesine Vester (1857-1939) and also of Herman Wolbers (1856-1926). Willem Vester was the grandfather of the sculptor Mari Andriessen (1897–1979) and the composers Hendrik Andriessen and Willem Andriessen . On September 10, 1854, he married Johanna Francina ten Berge, sister of the painter Bernardus Gerardus ten Berge . Gesine married the organist Nicolaas Hendrik Andriessen (1845–1913).
