Pieter Arie Scheen (born April 1, 1916 in The Hague ; † November 10, 2003 in Apeldoorn , Gelderland province ) was a Dutch art dealer and author on Dutch painters of the late 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries.

Life

Scheen, the eldest son of the Dutch headmaster, amateur painter, restorer and art dealer Pieter Scheen (1874–1952), grew up in constant contact with his father's art trade, founded in 1916, in The Hague. Whose gallery specialized in the Dutch painting of the Romantic period and the Hague School . He started working there at the age of 15 after being expelled from school several times. At times he also worked in a hat shop and as a representative of a metal foundry.

By working in his father's business, he acquired thorough knowledge. After evaluating existing literature, in particular the artist's lexicon General Lexicon of Fine Artists from Antiquity to the Present , he began to create a card index of Dutch painters from the period 1750 to 1850, which he later used for his lexicographical publications. In the 1930s he started his own business as an art dealer. During the Second World War he wrote a work on Dutch painters, which was published in 1946 under the title Honderd jaren Nederlandse Schilder- en Teekenkunst. De Romantiek met voor- en natijd (1750–1850) appeared. This work quickly became a standard work cited by art historians. It contained around 3000 artist biographies and around 400 illustrations. Building on this, he published other artist encyclopedias. In 1996 and 1997 he published two brochures with short stories.

In 1975 he withdrew from the Dutch art trade. In its segment of Dutch painting of the 18th and 19th centuries, he had established himself as the "most important pacemaker" over time.
