Hendrik Andriessen
Hendrik Franciscus Andriessen (born September 17, 1892 in Haarlem , Netherlands ; † April 12, 1981 ibid) was a Dutch composer .
Life
Hendrik Andriessen studied composition with Bernard Zweers and organ with Jean-Baptiste de Pauw (1852–1924) at the Amsterdam Conservatory . He was organist at the Maarschalkerweerd organ in the Sankt Katherinen Cathedral in Utrecht and became known for his talent for improvisation . From 1926 to 1954 he lectured at the Conservatory in Amsterdam in the subjects of composition and music theory and from 1930 to 1949 at the Institute for Catholic Church Music in Utrecht. From 1937 to 1949 he was director of the Conservatory in Utrecht and then from 1949 to 1957 Director of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague . The Catholic University of Nijmegen appointed him associate professor in 1952; he held this office until 1962. His work was widely used in Catholic church music in the Netherlands.
His brother Willem and his sons Louis and Jurriaan have also emerged as composers.
