Boudewijn de Groot
Boudewijn de Groot (born May 20, 1944 in the Tjideng camp near Batavia ) is a Dutch singer-songwriter who is primarily known for literary songs in the Dutch-speaking area.
Life
De Groot was born in a Japanese concentration camp . His mother died in 1945 while still in captivity. After the end of the war, he returned to the Netherlands with his father, but the father soon had to leave for Indonesia. Boudewijn lived with his aunt in Haarlem until 1951 . In 1952 he moved to Heemstede with his father and stepmother . There he met Lennaert Nijgh , who later became the text writer for many of his most successful recordings.
Boudewijn de Groot had his first success in 1965 with Een meisje van zestien , a translation of Charles Aznavour's Chanson Une fille de 16 ans by Lennaert Nijgh. In the next few years he was best known as a singer of socially critical songs, e. B. He komen other tijden (a translation of Bob Dylan's The Times They're A-Changin ' ), Weltterusten meneer de president ("Good night Mr. President", against the Vietnam War) and Testament . But he also sang, even predominantly, songs with poetic content, such as Verdronken Vlinder ("Drowned Butterfly"), Het Land van Maas en Waal ("The Land of Maas and Waal"), Eva and Meester Prikkebeen , whose lyrics are often impenetrable , the music, composed by De Groot himself, is melodic and loud.
After the success in the 1960s and early 1970s, he had only a few major single hits. But he always brings out new albums - albeit sometimes with long breaks - that sell well and are almost always rated well by the critics. In 2002 Lennaert Nijgh died of cancer, since then De Groot has mostly only written his own texts.
In addition to his work as a singer, De Groot also composes music for other artists (previously mostly with texts by Lennaert Nijgh) and is occasionally active as an actor (e.g. Death in the Cold Morning Light ).
